This matter of speaking poetry looks like one of the easiest things in life to do. Right? Wrong! As I observed the poets from all walks of life stand before a live audience and speak words of wisdom and importance, it became abundantly clear that HB (the host) was going to have his hands full for the next 3 hours.
Don't let the immaculate Sheraton Hotel give you the illusion that this was a "cake walk". This was a task of biblical proportions.
Now the moment of truth! The first poet stands and walks confidently to
the stage, taking hold of the microphone as the introductory music quiets,
the words flowed like the oil of a well oiled machine.
Home Base Poetry Welcome Center!
One after the other for 3
plus hours confident men and women took their place in history as part of an elite group: "The Super Poets".
Yes, I called them "The
Super Poets" because they handled themselves with the skill and grace of professional dancers. Their confidence could only be rivaled by airline pilots on
their first solo flight.
"HB", as the host is affectionately called, commanded control over the
crowd of 300 plus with the charisma of an opera star performing for the
100th time at the METROPOLITAN OPERA (THE MET) in New York City.
After he introduced the next poet, ("The"Super Poets") he found time to
visit different tables and to say hello to those in attendance. As an
observer, I could not help but realize that he appears to have a
"personal relationship" with each and everyone in attendance and each
and everyone has a "personal relationship" with him. Then I realized
that one of the "Marks" of a "Super Poet" is to have a "personal
relationship" with the audience.
Divine and others meet and greet after the show!
You see, the veteran attendee knows
that he or she has to have a "personal relationship" with the poet. The
poetry goes beyond superficial. It reaches deep into the inner soul of
a person and makes the listener think carefully about the words and how
they can be applied to one's personal life. This poetry is
educational. It's captivating.
Mr. and Mrs Dave Brown enjoyed the evening's program
and
State Representative Campbell and City Councilman Johnson
take the time to talk with members of the local community.
Like a 5 star general commanding troops from a command center, "HB" has
complete command of the program. When the time the came to offer words of
wisdom to men and women alike, he demonstrated the skill of an
orchestra conductor. He got the audience involved quickly and explained
the value of the wisdom being offered. I watched young and old alike
give gestures with their heads and waving hands, showing their approval
of the message. Then the humor came, the laughs, the reassurance and
most of all, the love of neighbor and one's fellow man.
Thanks HB for the Home Base
Poetry Program. Your place in history is forever sealed because you
have taken the time to make ordinary people into "Super Poets" and
stand on the stage of life and be examples of what we want in the
future, confident individuals who are able to make their mark in America's history! Thanks HB for the time, energy and the continued love for all!!!
