The "God Mother" of the civil rights movement was eulogized today by President Barack Obama as a person who lived a righteous life and changed the country for the better. Dr. Height walked with with Dr. Martin Luther King and stood with him on the Lincoln Memorial when he delivered the "I have A Dream" speech. She passed away last week at the age of 98.
She was a civil rights activist, long-time head of the National Council of Negro Women, teacher in the Brownsville Community Center, Brooklyn, NewYorkand was active in the Christian Youth Movement after its founding in 1935.
Her trademark hats and powerful presence were well known throughout the country. President Obama said she visited the White House 28 times and was very instrumental in lending support for the health care reform.
Dr. Camille Cosby, Alexis Herman and many others praised her for the decades of unwavering support as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement.
Her persistence in the fight for civil rights was never ending and the memory of her will continue to ignite more support for the rights of all.
